Crying I hurried to my car and started driving. Ten minutes later I was banging on the door. Finally Libby emerged. “Are we slumming it today sister?” She asked sarcastically. Not the welcome I was hoping for, I walked past her in a huff and headed to my old room. I realize it wasn’t the best idea to take off after an argument, Will and I were married now; we were obligated to talk things out. The way Will reacted about the pregnancy was unacceptable and I had no intention of sitting around waiting for him to come home.
I opened the door to my room and saw that things had been changed. My bed, computer and all of my things were gone and replaced with kids stuff. It seemed strange that so soon after I had gone it had happened, though Tessa did deserve her own room. I went to the bathroom to clean up my face and then back downstairs.
“I wasn’t trying to be rude, I can tell you’re upset. Sorry” Libby said as I sat down on the couch. “It’s fine,” I responded evenly. “Where is Tessa?” I asked. “With dad and his girlfriend, they have made a nice three person family with her,” Libby scoffed. “I’m sorry to hear that,” I spoke, and I was. “Whatever, If I have learned anything it’s that you cannot depend on anyone but yourself, everyone disappoints you,” She stated. “I don’t think that true” I replied. “Really? Well why are you here? I haven’t seen you since your wedding” Libby asked. “Will and I got into a disagreement over something pretty serious, I didn’t want to be home,” I started. “You haven’t seen me since my wedding because you have been avoiding me. I’ve invited you over several times, when I stop by you are never here. You didn’t even come to my house warming party!” I protested. All of a sudden I was crying again, this time I was unsure of why. “Calm down, let me make you some tea” Libby said and headed to the kitchen.
In all my life Libby had never made me tea, or anything for that matter. I took it as her way of saying she was sorry. “Thank you,” I said and gave her a hug. “So what is new with you?” I asked. “Started dating a new guy from work, he’s really sweet and older,” She said with raised eyebrows. “How much older?” I asked, instantly going into mom mode. “A few years, what’s the big?” she asked. “It’s just that..” I started but stopped myself. “Well I’m happy for you,” I chocked. We talked more for another hour and then I headed home.
“No way your winning this one!” I joked to my sister over foosball. After the argument with Brett I headed out for a drink and ran into Giselle. I tried to pretend everything was fine but she could tell something was bothering me. “It’s just a lot more difficult then I imagined,” I said to her as we sat down. “Well, I’m the same age as Brett. I can’t imagine being married right now. You should give her some credit,” Giselle said, coming to her defense. “It’s like, it doesn’t bother her that we are poor. I feel selfish for being in such a bad mood because I’m working this job I don’t like. And the announcement today just pushed me over the edge,” I started, getting worked up. “What announcement?” Giselle questioned. “She’s pregnant,” I replied. “How is the even possible, you have only been married for a few months,” My sister said naively. “Oh it’s possible,” I laughed.
“Well what are you going to do?” She asked. “That’s what I’m trying to figure out,” I repsonded. “Don’t worry about it, I’ve got it under control. Come on I’ll drive you home” I said and we headed to the car. “Can you grab my mail?” I asked Giselle as we sat outside of my parents house. “Come in and get it yourself, they aren’t home” She said and walked inside; I followed. “Edwin!” My mother exclaimed when I opened the door. So much for them not being home. “What are you doing here son?” My dad asked. “I was just dropping Giselle off, wanted to pick up some mail is all,” I said nervously. “Uh huh,” my father grumbled. “Am I not allowed to see my sister now?” I asked harshly. “I didn’t say that” He responded. “I take it you have had time to think things over?” My dad questioned. “There is nothing to think over dad, Brett and I are married and we are going to stay that way. If you don’t want to be a part of our family, that is something I cannot control. Have a nice evening,” I announced and headed for the door.
“I’m so sorry,” I said to Brett as I held her. “I didn’t mean to get so upset, I was just surprised. I’m so happy we are starting a family,”. “But you are right,” She cried. “How are we going to take care of ourselves and the baby?” “I go back to school in a month, I’ll have to go back to part time at the library. And what about school for you? How will this work?! She shouted. “Calm down, we will figure that out. It’s not good for you to get so upset,” I said soothing her. “Well figure it all out,” – I hoped that we would.
I picked up more hours at the store, to prepare for the baby. College would have to wait, there wouldn’t be a way for us to live if I wasn’t working. I wasn’t excited about it, but Brett and the baby were more important. I was searching online for a better paying job when I heard a knock at the door. I open it and my jaw dropped. “Come in,” I said anxiously. “Thank you,” She responded politely. “Can I get you something to drink?” I asked. “No thank you son, I came to talk” She said seriously. “your sister told me about your situation, I want to help,” she said.
Suddenly I felt a weight lift. “It’s not that simple Edwin, things will have to changed dramatically for you and Brett,” She started. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Babies are not cheap, Brett will need proper medical attention; you’ll need a larger home and you will need to go to college so you can have a career that can support your family!” She proclaimed. “I understand that mom,” I said. “you’ll have to make some sacrifices,” she said “And so will she,”. “If this is something you are willing to consider your father is willing to speak with you both,” She ended. “Let me phone Brett, I’m sure that will be fine,” I replied optimistically.
30 minutes later
I fidgeted in my seat. Edwin Sr. made me nervous; I wasn’t convinced help from Will’s parents would be the answer to our problems. But for Will I was willing to listen. “Your in the family or you’re not. We will help you as best we can but you both must make sacrifices. That means no crazy career son, I refuse to pay for aviation school. You don’t want to be a politician fine! chose something reputable,” Edwin Sr. roared. I stared at Will’s face, looking for a shocked reaction; but there wasn’t one. An hour later Edwin Sr. left our home, and It was my hope that I wouldn’t be seeing him anytime soon. All the stipulations for there ‘help’ seemed ridiculous. I knew Will and I could raise this child on our own. It wouldn’t be easy but it was worth the work.
“Everything looks great,” The doctor said. “Do you have any questions for me?” She asked. Will looked over at me and shrugged. “nope, I don’t think so,” I said with a smile. “Great, I’ll see you in two months. Take this to check out,” She said and handed Will a paper on her way out. I relaxed, it was great to hear that the baby was perfect and healthy. “Great,” Will grumbled as he looked at the bill.
“This is reality Brett, and it’s not just about us,” Will said over lunch. We were having the same discussion we had been having all week. “I just feel like they are using this as an excuse to control us. There rules are so rigid, I just want our marriage and our decisions to be made by us, not your parents!” I exclaimed. “I understand that, but we don’t have much choice. We cant even afford the current bills. I don’t have enough experience to get a better job and you need to finish school,” He said, defeated. “What kind of life do you want our child to have?” He asked.
“What would you do?” I asked Marci at the park a few days later. “Well, he’s right. You have to think about the baby. It’s not just about you or him anymore,” She replied. “Besides, it’s not the worst thing to move to a huge house and have an endless income,” She joked. “But it comes with so much,” I started. “His mother already made it clear to me that I’d have to quit work and join the Riverview Roses,” I complained. “That snotty group, gross!” Marci stated. “I know,” I said, making a face. The Riverview Roses was a mother-daughter group that was suppose to be about community involvement, but instead just threw lots of really expensive charity events. Bunny Lockwood was the president. “I think you know what you have to do, just don’t go off and become best friends with Celeste Hart!” Marci Joked. “That will be the day,” I replied.
“You okay in there?” Will yelled. I pushed myself off the floor and looked around for my toothbrush. “I’m fine!” I yelled back. Until recently I had no complaints about the pregnancy. I barely got sick and wasn’t tired. Other then the food cravings and weight gain I could forget I was pregnant. But morning sickness made it very real. I knew the sickness was natural but I was anxiously awaiting the next check up to make sure. Unfortunately we hadn’t paid the bill from the previous doctor’s visit.
“I think you’re right, I do want a good life for our child,” I said coming out of the bathroom. “You should be able to go to college and have a career,” I continued. “Are you sure? It’s not just a house and school Brett, It’s a different life,” Will reiterated. “Yes, I’m sure,” I responded “It will be fine, I can handle it”.
A couple of months later Will and I moved into the house across the street from his parents; It was beautiful, and I couldn’t wait to find out the sex of the baby so I could get started decorating the nursery. Will decided to pursue business and would start attending classes at the local college in a few weeks. Things were good, except for Bunny and her demands.
“You’ll need a nice dress for that event, and some school things..” Bunny rambled at the mall the next week. “I just want you to have some suitable things,” She said and eyed my jeans and top. I rolled my eyes. I complained to Will several times about how pushy I thought she was. But he always defended her and said she was trying to help. I finally gave up, I found it was a lot simpler to just go along with what she wanted. I didn’t have a mother growing up, maybe this was how they were.
“Very cute! You can barely see your little bump in that sweater!” She said excitedly. “We will take this one also,” She yelled to the sales clerk. I was getting tired of shopping. “Giselle was kind enough to put together a welcome party for you and Edwin,” Bunny started “So you’ll need to get a nice dress for that as well, some of our family friends will bet there also,” She smiled. “Great!” I faked, with a plastic smile.
“You feeling okay this morning?” Will said and rubbed my tummy. “Yep, just a little nauseous,” I replied and cuddled up to him. “I should get moving, your sister wants me to meet her and some of her friends for a picnic,” I said. “Oh, well that sounds fun,” Will grinned. An overbearing mother-in-law didn’t seem so bad, if it meant I got to be with the love of my life.
I walked out to the picnic area and stopped, there was Celeste Hart. It seemed like I couldn’t escape her. She lived down the street, was a part of the Riverview Roses and also was Giselle’s best friend. When we were around people she put on a fake charade; but she always gave me dirty looks and I heard her saying mean things about me to Mary Kay during an event a few days earlier. I put on a big smile and kept walking to the picnic table. “I’m looking forward to your party,” Anne Marie Shallow said as I sat down. “Yea, it seems like it will be a good time,” her sister Mary Kay added sarcastically. “Don’t be mean I’ve worked hard on this!” Giselle piped in. “Thank you for that,” I said warmly to her. “Did you need any help?” I asked. “Nope, I’ve taken care of all of it. You just relax,” She said with a wink. Will and I had yet to tell anyone other then family about my pregnancy. Giselle seemed to be the most excited.
“This is a very lovely home you have,” Mrs. Hart said to me at the party the next week. “Thank you, we are still getting settled,” I said with a smile. I wasn’t use to being around adults and it was clear to me that Will’s world was filled with affairs like this. “So when are you due?” I asked her, referring to her pregnancy. “any day now,” She laughed. I talked to her about her pregnancy for a while longer. The party was a bit boring, I couldn’t wait for Marci to show up so I could relax.
“You did invite Marci didn’t you?” I asked Giselle a couple hours later. “I’m sorry Brett, I didn’t,” She responded nervously. I heard Celeste chuckle. “Why not?” I asked confused. “Mom didn’t think it would be appropriate,” She said as she pulled me away from Celeste. “I’m sorry, it’s just how these things go. You’ll get use to it,” Libby hadn’t shown up either, at first I thought it was because she didn’t want to come but something told me she wasn’t invited either. An hour later I faked a headache and went upstairs to lay down.
“I just don’t understand why my friends and family weren’t invited,” I said to Will over breakfast the next morning. “Come on Brett, parties like that are no fun anyway. Do you really think Marci or you dad would have had a good time?” He asked. “Well no, they probably wouldn’t have. But that not the point,” I started. “What is?” He asked looking annoyed. “Uh, never mind; it’s not that big of a deal,” I fibbed.
“Hey stranger!” I shouted to Marci. “I can’t believe you live her, this place needs its own zip code,” She commented. “Where is your suit?” I asked. “underneath,” she responded. “This is quite the set up,” She said referring to the tables that hadn’t been taken in from the party. “Yea those haven’t been taken in yet,” I responded. “From what?” She asked. “Oh, Giselle had some people over here yesterday, in a group,” I stumbled. “Like a party?” Marci spat. “Yea, like a party but it wasn’t very fun,” I responded. “I guess my invite got lost in the mail,” She said angrily. “I didn’t put together the guest list honestly, I didn’t even know that you weren’t invited until late in the party,” I replied. “And why wasn’t I invited to my best friends party?” She asked harshly. “Will’s mom thought it would be best if..” I started. “Seriously Brett!,” Marci said cutting me off. “Your going to blame his mom! Have a backbone. I guess I just don’t fit in with your new perfect life,” She shouted. “I didn’t say that!” I replied defensively.
“It’s bad enough that your hanging out with the snob squad all the time, but now you don’t even invite me to your party!” She yelled. “I think It would be best if I made it easy for you, let’s forget about being friends. I don’t fit into your new world and until you realize you don’t either, we have nothing in common,” she said and walked away. I was shocked. We had gotten into a few squabbles before but she’d never said she didn’t want to be my friend. I went swimming alone, I’m sure she’d change her mind.
A few months later
“Ok open your eyes” I directed Will. “It’s a boy!” he exclaimed excitedly. “Yep” I beamed. I had found out a couple of weeks earlier and excitedly decorated the nursery. The room was perfect, school was going well for both Will and I and I couldn’t wait for the baby to get here. “I can’t wait for him to get here” Will said, reading my mind. “Edwin the fourth” Will declared with a smile. “Seriously?!” I shouted with a sour face. “Yes of course Brett, it’s a family tradition. Every first born son,” He explained. “I suppose I can’t stop tradition, but I get to pick his middle name,” I responded. “That seems fair,” He said and gave me a kiss.
“Congratulations,” Mary Kay Shallow said to me the next day after class. “Excuse me?” I questioned. I hadn’t told her I was pregnant and I had been doing my best to hide my bump. I thought I was passing. “On the baby, I heard from Marci. Congrats!” She said with a smile. “Oh thank you,” I whispered. Will and I had still only shared the pregnancy with a small group of people. I wasn’t embarrassed of the being pregnant, I just didn’t want anyone to treat me differently. When you’re caring a child you get a lot of attention from everyone, even strangers. The baby would be here soon so I wouldn’t have to worry about it much longer. Marci refused to speak with me, It seemed very strange that she was talking to Mary Kay, they didn’t know each other. I decided to stop waiting for her to speak to me.
I found her out front with Pete. “Marci, Can I speak with you for a minute?” I asked politely. Her face turned to a frown, “What do you want?” She asked. “I thought we could talk, maybe get something to eat?” I asked. “No Brett, I think we have already said all we needed to one another. We are not friends,” She said coldly. “But Marci,” I pleaded and suddenly I was crying. Another perk or being pregnant, being over emotional. Marci softened “Look, it wasn’t going to work out,” she stated. “But,” I started. Suddenly I felt a sharp pain. Everything went black.
When I came to I was in a strange bed. My eyes traveled around the room, I was in the hospital. “Brett, Oh sweetheart,” I looked up to see Will. Then I looked down at my stomach. Suddenly I felt sick, “Where is he?” I demanded. “Calm down, There have been some complications,” Will stated. I looked closely at his eyes, they were bloodshot. “Oh no, what’s wrong?” I begged. “I’ll go get the doctor,” He replied.
I looked out over the pool area and smile. Will and I were having a fabulous time on our honeymoon. The vineyard was beautiful and we were staying in the nicest suite I had ever stepped foot in. The first morning I woke up as Mrs. Brett Lockwood I was a bit anxious. I couldn’t believe that I had gotten married at sixteen. I didn’t have any regrets, I was happy and in love. But I would be making decisions as a couple for the rest of my life, since I was so use to being an adult I didn’t think I would have issues with it. But I was a bit concerned that Will might. I was letting him sleep in late this morning.
The weather was perfect and we had fun splashing around in the pool. After we were done Will told me he had a surprise for me. Since we had been away he had given me a beautiful bracelet that he said once belonged to his grandmother and a new dress that was very pretty, but more his sisters style then my own. I didn’t want to seem ungrateful so I wore it with a smile.
“I think you’ll really like the gift I got you” he said to me with a smile as we sat by the fire. “Will, you don’t need to get me anything else. You’re spoiling me,” I responded. “I just want you to be happy and know how much I love you,” He whispered. “I am happy with you and no gifts are needed for that,” I replied. He smiled widely. “I need to go back to Riverview for a few hours today,” Will stated. “Why? What’s Wrong?” I asked concerned. Riverview was three hours away, him going there and back would me I would be alone until late. “I just need to take care of some business that can’t wait,” He said sternly. “Well I can go with you,” “No I really need to go alone, I already booked you a spa day, I’ll be back before you know it,” he exclaimed. “With your gift!”
I headed back to Riverview to speak with my parents. I still hadn’t told Brett that they had cut me off, and with our honeymoon ending in a few days we were homeless. I had originally planned for us to stay at the one of our families rental properties until we had found the perfect home, but something told me that might not be an option any longer.
“Are they in a good mood?” I asked my sister nervously. “Not so much, things have been really tense around here,” Giselle responded. “And I’m grounded for a month, so if you could talk to them about that also, I’d appreciate it,” She continued. “I’m really sorry I got you in this, I’ll talk to them don’t worry about it,” I said and walked outside where my dad was waiting.
“Sit down son,” My father said in a stern voice. I sat down quickly. “I want to start by saying that I’m very disappointed in you,” He began. “I’m sorry dad, I..” I started but was silenced. “Let me continue,” He said. “I have worked very hard to provide a wonderful life for my family. I have given you the best of everything and if this is how you repay me, then you’re on you own,” He said angrily. “Dad, I love her it’s not about you,” I replied adamantly. “That is where you are wrong Edwin, everything you do is a reflection of me,” He started. “Your mother and I have discussed this, you will get this marriage annulled,” He stated. “No I won’t dad, I’m not doing that,” I shouted. “Lower you voice!” My mother exclaimed as she joined us.
“I’m done with this conversation, when you have come to your senses we will talk. Goodbye son,” He spoke angrily and walked inside. “Mom, I’m not annulling our marriage, you have to understand. I love her and want to be with her forever,” I said sadly. “That is your choice Edwin,” she began. “Mom I’ve asked you a thousand times, please call me Will,” I pleaded. “And I have declined a thousand times, you are Edwin William Lockwood III, there is no Will; You must accept that” She began. “I’m siding with your father on this. That girl is not acceptable, she is not the right kid of wife for you to have. You don’t understand this now because you are young, but this will negatively affect your future,” She stated. “Mom I don’t want to run for office, I’m not even interested in politic, I was to be a pilot!” He exclaimed passionately.
“Edwin that is silly. You go to all the events with your father, when you were a little boy you told me you wanted to be just like him,” She said with a smile. “Mom, I was five, I didn’t know anything about life,” I spat. “This discussion is over. Only when you annul your marriage will you be welcome back into the family. All your accounts are frozen, we have informed the family about this situation and they will not provide you with any money,” She ended. “Mom please don’t do this, what am I suppose to do,” I begged. “You have made your choice Edwin, I must get ready for dinner – you can let yourself out,”. I sat outside for awhile, then I went and gathered some clothing. I knew now that I had no choice but to tell Brett, I hoped she would understand.
“I just don’t understand what was so important,” I pouted to Will over dinner. I had a good time at the spa yesterday, the massage actually made me tired. I went back to the suite for a shower, and nap and I ended up waking up this morning at 7am, Will still hadn’t made it back from Riverview. “I told you, I had some business to handle,” He said. “There is something I need to tell you,”. I could tell be the expression on his face that it was serious. “My parents have financially cut me off,” He said and put his head down. “I don’t understand, why?” I asked. “They were upset about the marriage, they want me to get it annulled. So they won’t support me any longer,” He replied. “I see,” I said. “When did you find out?” I asked. “After our wedding, I wanted to wait to tell you,” He responded. “That was a bad idea!” I shouted angrily.
“I’m sorry Brett, I thought I could talk to them,” He said. “So what does this mean for us?” I asked nervously. “Well, I rented a place for us, It’s a fixer upper so its cheap. Just need some paint and stuff, shouldn’t be hard. And it’s close to the library,” He announced. “So you made all these decisions without me,” I spat. “when your married you make decisions together, good or bad,” I argued. “I didn’t know how to tell you, I’m sorry,” He said. “Here I took a picture of this place,” He said handing me a photo.
“wow!” I exclaimed. It didn’t at all look nice but I’m sure it wouldn’t take much to make it livable. “Well its summer, I can start working full-time at the library and you can get a full time job also. We’ll be fine,” I said sweetly. “I don’t know what I’m going to do about school though, That part I haven’t figured out,” He stated. “We have three months, we will figure it out together,” I smiled. “Oh I almost forgot about your gift, I got you a car!” He smiled. “What, OMG how?” I asked. “Don’t worry about it, just enjoy it. You can drive us home when we go,”.
A few days later Will and I headed home to our new place. It didn’t take long for us to get it cleaned up and livable.
Two Months Later
I was happy to have a place that was just ours. Things were coming along well, and though I knew it was a large adjustment for Will. I had no problems budgeting. Will had gotten a job at the grocery store, It wasn’t his first choice but his lack of experience didn’t really allow for him to do much else.
“Yum” Will said with a smile over breakfast. “So what is your plan for the day?” He asked me. “Work and then I think the pool later with Marci,” I responded. “fun,” he stated. Since we were both working fulltime and at different hours we only saw each other in the morning and before bed. I knew it wouldn’t be this way forever, but I could tell Will was getting tired of it.
Most of the town spent there days at the pool so the library wasn’t that busy. “excuse me, miss book lady?” a lady yelled into my ear. I hadn’t been feeling well lately and was reading up on my symptoms. I was so engrossed that I didn’t realize she needed me until she was in my ear. “I’m sorry, let me help you” I said jumping to my feet.
“You know what you both need, a party!” Marci yelled from the pool later that afternoon. “I don’t know,” I responded. “Pete and I can help,” she continued, volunteering her boyfriend. “Yea, Brett it will be a good time,” Pete piped up. “We can do it on Friday!” She exclaimed. Maybe it would cheer Will up. “Ok, Let’s do it” I replied.
“Hey Celeste, Hi Mrs. Hart,” I said as I walked out of the grocery store. “Hello Edwin, how is your summer going?” Mrs. Hart said nervously. “Really well!” I lied. “That’s good to hear,” She said and looked over at Celeste. Celeste hadn’t even said hello to me and she was standing away and making no attempts at a conversation “Well, Edwin we really should be going,” She said and smiled. I walked to my car. It had been a hard month. Luckily I had found a job, but I hated it. I worked long hours and I barely got a chance to see Brett or my friends. We couldn’t afford to go out to eat or games or anything fun. When I imagined a future marriage with Brett, it didn’t look like this. The worst part was I still didn’t know how I’d be able to pay for school; and I’d have register for classes in a month if I was going to attend in the fall. I hoped something would work out, maybe my parents would come around.
“How has your summer been?” I asked Giselle. “Busy, I’m taking some college prep courses and I have riding and dance,” She went on, I tuned out. It wasn’t that I didn’t think Giselle was interesting, I was to concerned with Bobby. He had come with Giselle and Brittney Ross even though I hadnt invited them. I didn’t want to complain because Will was having a great time, but I was worried at the looks Bobby was sending me. I was also very disappointed that Libby hadn’t shown up. She clearly was still upset at me, when I stopped over to the house last week she had blown me off. I was worried about her, it wasn’t like her to miss a party regardless of the guest list. “You look nice,” Bobby said smoothly as he came up behind me.
“Thanks, Will bought me this dress,” I replied through tight lips. “Well I must say I’m disappointed that I didn’t get an invite tonight,” she said smoothly “You know Giselle and Will are under the impression that we don’t know each other, maybe I should set them straight,”. “No, please don’t ruin Will’s night, I’m sorry I didn’t invite you. I just wasn’t sure if you were in town,” I lied. “Right, well Brett I think we will have to get together again soon,” He said with a wink. “I hear Will spends a lot of time away from the house, you must get lonely,” he continued. “No.. I’m great,” I stumbled. “Right, well I’ll see you soon I’m sure,” He said and walked away. I stood there for awhile, Maybe I would need to tell Will about Bobby and I after all.
The Next Morning
“Grr” I growled as I threw my favorite jeans on the floor. They usually fit me snugly, which I liked but lately they had been getting tighter; Today they wouldn’t even zip. I examined myself in the mirror, I must have gained weight somewhere. But I didn’t seem to look any different. I put on a skirt and started breakfast.
I decided to skip the waffles and go for a healthy omelet, I reached for the ingredients. The truth was I hadn’t been working out much. I usually went to the gym with Will but because he was always tired from work he never wanted to go anymore. I sprinkled some spices on the omelet. Then I froze, “No, that’s not possible,” I said out loud. It occurred to me there could be another reason for the weight gain. Will and I were always safe, it was a requirement I had especially after Libby’s unplanned pregnancy. My mind jumped back to the afternoon I informed Will that my dad agreed to our marriage, we were so excited that we got carried away. Suddenly I wasn’t feeling so well. I picked up the phone and called Marci to come over.
“That one to?” Marci asked me as I walked out to our deck with her. “Yep,” I stated calmly holding the positive test. “Well you are taking this well, you even seem kind of happy,” She responded. I have to admit I was excited, but also very nervous and scared. I looked down at the black writing on the test; ‘pregnant’ it read. I couldn’t wait to tell Will. I decided to tell him during his lunch break; I quickly got started cooking.
“That was delish,” Will said over lunch. The moment was now, I could barely touch my salad over lunch because I was so excited. Will got up to clean the dishes. “I have something to tell you, can you come sit back down,” I asked with a smile. “We’re pregnant!” I exclaimed. I watched the news register on Will’s face. Instead of the smile I was expecting there was a frown. “Are you sure?” He choked. “Yes I took three tests this morning,” I responded, confused. I reached over to give him a hug and he pushed me away. “Why are you upset?” I asked through tears. “This isn’t what I want Brett, this isn’t the way things are suppose to be. We can barely take care of ourselves, and now there is going to be a baby. Maybe everyone is right. We’re too young” He stated and headed for the door. I burst into tears, I was married and pregnant but I had never felt so alone.
I walked up to Will nervously. I wanted to apologize to him, to tell him how I was sorry I didn’t even give him a chance to explain. I wanted to tell him I missed him. But as soon as I laid eyes on him my mind went blank. He seemed nervous. As well. “Will..” I started. But he stopped me. “Brett, thank you for coming. I was so nervous waiting here, I thought you wouldn’t show. You look beautiful,” He began. “Thank you,” I said and gave him a hug.
“I brought you here for a specific reason. I love you Brett, I want to spend everyday of my life telling you how much you mean to me. I know the past few months between us haven’t been perfect but I can explain that. I want to be with you forever. There is nobody else for me. Will you marry me?” Will asked. All the air in my body seemed to vacate with that question. My mind went blank. And before I could think of what this would really mean. I heard “Yes, absolutely, yes,” escape from my mouth.
“Ohmigosh, is there real?” I questioned will as I looked at the ring. It was beautiful. Exactly the type of ring I always imagined. He knew me so well. “Yes, this is real and this is forever,” He whispered in my ear before giving me a kiss. “Let’s take a walk so I can tell you what has been going on,” Will pronounced and grabbed my hand. We walked hand in hand just as we did on our very first date.
Before long we were back at Will’s house sitting in the library. “I’ve already working it all out so you don’t have to worry about anything. I’ll talk to you dad and get his permission and then we can get married very soon” He started. Things were moving fast, the old Brett would have taken more time to think about all of this. But I shut my rationale side up, I would follow my heart. “We can get a nice place in town, And while you finish high school I can enroll In the aviation program at SV University. It’s perfect!” Will said excitedly. “It sounds wonderful,” I said as I snuggled up to him.
“I take it she said yes!” Giselle Lockwood exclaimed as she walked in to the library and sat down. I nodded my head and smiled. “Giselle helped me get this all together,” Will stated. “your such a good sister, it was perfect” I declared. “No problem. Welcome to the family,” She said with a smile. “I can help you with the wedding planning as well,” She began “I’ve learned a lot about event planning from mother,” She continued. “Will she be helping?” I asked. Giselle and Will fell silent. “I think it would be best if we told my parents after we got married,” Will stated calmly. “Um.. okay,” I uttered. I didn’t know why he wanted to wait, but it could have something to do with all the pressure they have been putting on him about college. Maybe it was best I stayed out of it.
Will’s Point Of View
“Are you sure about this Will? Maybe you should tell them,” Giselle whispered as soon as Brett left for the bathroom. “No, this is best. After we are married they our parents will have to accept her. I’ve already started getting money in for my graduation and I have Great Aunt Pearls trust that I can access in a week to pay for the wedding myself. It will all be good. Trust me” I said. “Yea, your probably right. I’m so excited to start planning!,” Giselle shouted and gave me a hug. It was all going to be perfect.
Will wanted to ask my dad right away. But I told him it would be best to wait until after his birthday. Things slowly returned to somewhat normal. With the end of school near the Library was busy. I decided to wait to tell anyone about being engaged. I wanted some time to sit with it and make sure it was right. But I decided to follow my heart long ago and I knew I wasn’t going to change my mind. I decided the first person I should tell was Marci.
She had recently started seeing a new guy so we weren’t spending as much time together. I finally got her over to my house the night before Will’s birthday party. “what’s with the hair? I asked Marci. “I thought I’d try something new,” She said and winked. “So what is this big news you have to tell me? I need to meet Pete for a date soon,” She continued. “I’m engaged!” I shouted. I pulled my ring out of my pocket and put it on my hand. “Look!” I continued. “Wow, that’s a huge rock!” Marci shouted. “Congratulations, I can’t believe this,” She stated. “I know, it’s amazing! Will has great taste though doesn’t he?” I raised as I looked at the ring again. “Amazing taste!” She yelled.
“So honestly what do you think? I know it’s kind of crazy and we are so young. Tell me what you think really,” I begged. “Honestly Brett, I’m happy you are finally doing something for yourself. Will is a great guy, and he loves you. I’m for it,” She said and gave me a hug. “I have so many ideas for your dress!” Marci squeaked. And the planning really began.
“Did you like your gift?” I asked Will later that night. “Yep, its awesome,” He said referring to the vintage compass I got him. “You’re a hard person to shop for. What do you get the boy who has everything,” I started. “I figured if you had a compass you would always know how to get home, no matter where you fly to,”.
“You’re adorable,” Will said as he cuddled up to me. “ I have another gift for you,” I whispered with a wink. “I thought you wanted to wait?” He stated. “We did,” I said and gave him a sweet kiss.
The next morning
“I better get going. I’m meeting you dad for lunch. I don’t want to be late,” Will began “I’ll call you after I talk to him,” He ended. I was nervous. Today was the day Will was going to ask my dad and I was worried he would say no. Things with dad had been tense lately. There just wasn’t room in our house for two parents. I admit I do like not having as much responsibility around the house, but I didn’t take dad seriously when he tried to discipline me.
He was still sober, and went to weekly meetings. He recently started dating and seemed to be in a good mood all the time. I hoped that would work in my favor. He still spent a lot of time caring for Tessa. Which is good because Libby was always out. She said she was working, but I had a hard time believing that. I felt like she was up to something. Maybe if I shared a secret with her she would share one with me.
“Hey Libs,” I uttered as I walked into her room. “Whats up?” She asked in annoyance. “Nothing, I was just seeing what you were up to,” I began. “I was actually on my way out, do you know where dad is. I need him to watch Tessa,” said Libby. “He went out, but I can watch her for a bit,” I continued. “Thanks, are you sure you didn’t want anything else. You look kinda strange,” Libby announced.
“Well actually, there is something I want to tell you. It’s a secret so you can’t tell anyone yet. But… Will asked me to marry him, and I said yes!” I shouted with excitement. Libby’s face went blank. “Are you serious?” She asked, in a tone that was very far from excited. “Yes, I’m serious,” I said angrily. “I think that’s the stupidest plan you have had yet,” Libby said and walked out of the room.
I wasn’t expecting her to be overjoyed. But it seemed mean to me that she was such a jerk about it. My whole life had been about taking care of Libby. Cooking, cleaning, paying bills and working; all of it was for her. I barely remember my childhood and I’m certain it was in part due to the fact that I had to grow up so fast. I looked down at Tessa playing; she was growing up so fast. It was good that I was going to be moving out. She would be getting older and need her own space. And when I was married I’d be able to provide for her more.
I was working on writing a paper later when I got an instant message from the screename BobbyQ. Great, I thought to myself. I hadn’t thought about Bobby since the night we hung out. I’d seen him at school but he barely said hi to me. I wonder what he wanted.
BobbyQ: So you and Will are back in full effect I see
Brettsavestheday: Yea, things are great.
BobbyQ: To bad, I thought we could hang out again. Last time was a lot of fun!
Brettsavestheday: I gotta go ttyl
I had enough to worry about without adding Bobby Quinn to it.
Wills Point of View
Well that didn’t go as I thought it would. But he didn’t say no, so there was hope. Will thought to himself as he walked to his car. “Will wait up!” yelled a girls voice. He looked back to see Celeste. “Happy belated birthday!” She shouted. “Um.. thanks,” I said. “Did you get my gift? I didn’t know if you were having a party so I just dropped it off,” She continued with a smile. “Yea, thanks,” I lied. I had only opened Brett’s gift so far, I hadn’t gotten to the others. “so are you having a party? My invitation must be lost,” Celeste inquired. “I did have one, just a small one. I thought it was best if you not come,” I said. I watched her smile turn to a frown as she bent her head down.
Will’s Point Of View
“Why is that?” She questioned angrily. “Because I’m with Brett, She is my girlfiend and she is who I’m going to be with forever,” I started. “Forever? You don’t know that,” Celeste spat at me. “Yes I do,” I said. “No you don’t!” She yelled. “Yes, I do Celeste. I do,” I whispered and walked away.
I rushed over to Will’s house; I knew he had to be back from talking with my dad. I found him in his bathroom. “What did he say?” I asked in a worried tone. “Well he didn’t say no,” Will said and grabbed my hands. “I told him our plan and he said he would get back to me,” Will said. “I hope he says yes,” I squeaked. The anxiety was getting to me. “I’m sure he will,” Will stated and looked into my eyes.
We were so much in love. My dad had to say yes. He had to.
We didn’t have to wait to long for an answer. A week later dad bombarded me in my room for a talk. “Are you sure about this Brett? I know you are a smart girl who thinks things through. So I want to say yes. But you’re so young. You have your whole life ahead of you” He announced. “Dad, I’m sure. I have thought about all the options. It’s the best thing for me. I love Will and he can provide for me also. I want to go to college, I want to travel and I want to someday get out of this town. Most of all I want to be with someone I love forever.,” I said passionately.
“I think you should wait until you’re eighteen. Then do you want,” He said. “Dad please. I have never asked you for anything. I have spent my life taking care of you and Libby. Please,” I begged. “I’ll think about it,” He said sadly and walked out of my room.
“are you one hundred percent about this Brett?” Dad asked me the next morning while we cleaning. “yes,” I replied. “Then you have my blessing,” He said. “Thank you so much dad,” I cried and gave him a hug. “thank you”.
The next two months went by in a flash. Giselle came to the library a lot and helped me with the wedding planning. Will and I decided we wanted a very small guest list and Giselle was determined that everything else be big. I had to talk her out of a lot of extravagant things. “You never imagined your wedding when you were a child?” She asked me one night as I was putting away books. “Not really,” I thought out loud. “I’m don’t care so much about the wedding, I’m excited about our life afterwards,” I said to her with a smile.
With the end of school a week away I was working hard at the library, and studying whenever I had a chance. “Hey Brett,” Said Bobby. “Oh..hey,” I replied and stopped putting away books. “Workin hard,” He asked with a smirk. “Yep!” I shouted.
“Do you think you can get off early. We should get out of here,” He whispered in my ear. “Bobby, I told you Will and I are back together. I’m not interested in you like that, sorry,” I said. “I’m sure Will would love to hear what you were up to during your time off,” Bobby stated. “He already knows,” I lied. “Does he, well I guess that is a good thing for you then huh,” He said slyly and walked away. I hadn’t told Will about making out with Bobby. I didn’t think I needed to, we were broken up at the time. I had let the Celeste incident go, no more questions. He didn’t need to know.
The day of the wedding came fast. It was an hour before the ceremony was set to start and Will was nowhere to be found. My stomach was in knots.
“Brett!,” I heard Will shout from behind me. He was here. It was all okay. Giselle walked around with a clip board, checking things off and making sure things were perfect. But I didn’t care, Will was here. Everything would be perfect.
And it was. In front of a small group of family and friends Will and I became husband and wife.
“Are you happy?” I asked Will after the ceremony. “extremely” he replied with a smile.
Will’s Point of View
“Why don’t you sit down, I’m going out front to meet Giselle” I said. “In my haste to get us to our honeymoon I forgot my wallet,” I lied to Brett. I hadn’t forgotten my wallet. My cards were not working for some reason.
Will’s Point Of View
“Thanks for coming. You brought the money right?” I asked Giselle. “Yea, here you go,” She said and handing me cash. “Will I know why you cards aren’t working,” She began. “Mom and dad know about the wedding. They froze all your accounts,” She said delicately. “What? How? Did you tell them?” I yelled. “No, no I didn’t tell them. I saw them talking to the Harts when I got home. Then they were looking at your transaction history and asking me all these questions. Did you tell Celeste?” Giselle asked. “No! well not really. I guess I may have hinted at it. Oh god!”
Will’s Point of View
“What am I going to do?” I asked my sister. “Your going to have a wonderful honeymoon and you’re going to decide with Brett what to do. There are no secrets in marriage,” She replied.
I stood there holding the picture. “Brett, what are you thinking?” Marci asked me concerned. “Brett, I don’t like this look on your face, talk to me,” She begged. But I couldn’t. “Marc thank you for showing me this. I’ll talk to Will and I’ll keep you posted on the outcome okay. I have to get back to work now,” I said to her coldly “But I’m going to hold onto this picture”. She just stared at me for a moment but then walked away. I wasn’t mad at her. I was just hurt. I tried to get back to work but my mind wouldn’t let me.Finally I told Mr. Holland I wasn’t feeling well and I needed to leave early. I ran to my cars in tears. I just couldn’t get the image of Will and Celeste out of my mind. I planned to just go home but before I knew it I had driven to Wills house.
I walked up to his door and knocked. I didn’t know what I was going to say but I knew that it was not going to be pretty. Nobody answered, I knocked again and waited. Finally the butler came to the door and told me that “Edwin the third is not available”. This enraged me more. I knew he was home, his car was there. I didn’t argue and left. I drove straight to Marci’s but her mom said she was at the local hang out, so I headed there.
As I was walking up to the door I spotted Will. I felt like yelling at him and demanding he tell me what was going on. But nothing came out, I was just in shock. “Hey pretty girl” Will whispered to me and gave me a kiss. I pulled away. “I saw the picture of you and Celeste, Will! Stop pretending. I know you have been seeing her!” I screamed at him with tears in my eyes. “What are you talking about Brett?” Will responded with a confused look on his face. “Don’t play dumb!” I shouted to him and through the picture in his face. It fell to the ground. He picked it up and look at it then he put it in his sweatshirt.
We just stood look at each other. He didn’t say anything for what seemed like forever. Then finally he spoke. “Brett, I can explain this. I haven’t being seeing Celeste. I invited her to a party my parents had as my date,” He stated calmly. “WHY! Why would you invite her to a party as your date? I am your girlfriend Will. That doesn’t make any sense!” I screamed in disbelief. “Well, I thought it would be easier,” He stumbled. “I just.. I didn’t know if you would be..,” he continued. “Look, nothing happened with Celeste and I. She kissed me but I told her I was in love with you!” He stated. “I don’t believe a word you are say,” I said to him in the harshest tone I had ever used. “I should have known never to trust you, we are done Will. DONE!,” I said and walked away. My heart felt like it was breaking, but I didn’t trust him anymore. I needed to get away.
I found Marci easily. I walked over to her and told her about what had just happened between Will and I. “wow, I can’t believe you did that,” Marci stated. “so you don’t believe him? Has he lied to you before?,” She asked eagerly. He hadn’t to my knowledge. In the time I had known him he was honest. Was I wrong to not listen to him? I thought to myself. “Brett!,” Marci shouted. I had zoned out. “I’m sorry. I need a drink,” I declared. Kids snuck alcohol into this type of hangout all the time. I knew it wouldn’t be hard to find some. “Are you sure about that Brett, I mean doesn’t your dad have a problem with that,” She whispered kindly. “I’ll be fine I said. But I wasn’t. After three drinks I wasn’t myself. But I wasn’t thinking about Will or anything else for the first time in a long time. I felt great. And then the cops showed up.
The officer was actually pretty nice. I cried the whole way home. I got a ticket for underage drinking and being out past curfew, the fines alone would drain my whole savings account. When the officer put me into the custody of my father I was shocked to see the look of disappointment on his face. Then I got angry.
“What were you thinking!” He yelled at me after the police officer left. “You don’t have the right to yell at me!” I shouted back. He had never been there for me. Never been a real parent. What right did he have. “Go to your room, I can’t look at your right now,” He said to me sadly.
I headed inside only to find Will at the step. “What are you doing here? Your going to get in trouble,” I slurred to him. “I need to talk to you, I don’t want to break up. Can you please just listen to me!” He begged. “Just leave me alone, please just leave me alone,” I said and walked up to my room. He didn’t follow.
I headed straight to bed. I was suddenly very tired. But twenty minutes later I was getting up. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t get Will off my mind. I was so angry at him and at my father.
I got up and looked in the mirror. I thought about Celeste and how she always looked so perfect. Maybe that’s why Will liked her more then me. I finally decided I was fed up. Being sweet only gets your hurt by others. I vowed to make a change. I would simply cut my emotions off. I didn’t need Will! I would be a new Brett.
When I awoke the next morning I was more determined then ever. My plan was to go to the mall and get some new clothes, and a haircut. I went into Libby’s room to see if she wanted to come along. But I only found my father playing with Tessa. He didn’t see me looking in the room. He seemed so happy. He had recently gotten promoted and was still sober. I was happy for him. But I also felt so much anger. He was never there for Libby or I. I didn’t even get a chance to be a child, because I had to take care of Libby. And there he was playing with Tessa and teaching her things. I walked away in disgust. I wish I could take away all this anger I felt, but I didn’t know how.
When I got back from the mall I was really excited to show Libby all my new things. I parked and went straight to her room. Only she wasn’t alone. She was with an older boy. Part of me wanted to yell at her and him, she wasn’t allowed to have boys in her room any longer. Instead of saying anything I excused myself and went to my room.
Later when I was leaving to go to the hangout she stopped me. “What is with the new digs?,” Libby asked me. “You look good! But this isn’t something you would usually wear,” She stated. “Exactly, I’m like a whole new me!,” I said with a smile. “Well I heard from Ruby Donner that Will broke up with you yesterday. Does that have anything to do with this little makeover?” She replied. “Ruby Donner doesn’t know anything!” I said angrily and walked away.
I sat quietly sipping my drink. It seemed everyone around me was having a good time. I was surrounded by a lot of people but I just felt lonely. I really did miss Will. I got out my phone to text him but decided against it. “Having a bad night?” Bobby Quinn asked me. I had been so deep in thought I hadn’t seen him come up.
I had gone to school with Bobby Quinn for a long time and he had never spoken to me about anything but school work. It seemed strange he would care about my night. “I guess you can say that,” I replied to him. “Care to dance,” He asked and held out his hand. I took it. We danced and had many drinks. He confessed to always having a crush on me. I didn’t really know if I believed him but it was nice to not be alone. Then he said something that sent my heart racing. “Will doesn’t deserve a girl like you,” He whispered in my ear. When he asked me to go back to his place with him I said yes. I didn’t want to face going back home to my dad.
His house was very nice. Located three houses down from Will’s house, it was a lot smaller but just as grand. I had to give it to Bobby, he was a charmer. Before I knew it I was in his arms.
It wasn’t long before we were kissing. When he asked me to stay over, I felt comfortable enough with him to say yes. But I made it known we wouldn’t be getting physical.
I woke up the next morning with a horrible headache. I quickly realized I was in my underwear and got dressed. Bobby was nowhere to be found. I finally found him out by the pool. “how long have you been up?” I asked him “Not long, it seems you snore so I slept in the guest bedroom last night,” he said with a smile. “I don’t snore!” I squeaked. “anyways, I’m gonna go, last night was fun,” I stated awkwardly. “yea we will have to hang out again,” he replied. I headed home.
I couldn’t help but look at Wills house on my way. I really did miss him. Tears fell to my lap before I realized I was crying. I picked up my phone to call Will, but stopped myself. I kept hoping he would call me, but he didn’t. A day later I received flowers from him. The card read “come to the place we had our first date, I have a surprise for you and it just can’t wait, Love Will. The note said to dress in formalwear. I instantly starting searching through my new clothes for something perfect to wear.
Will’s Point Of View
“Did you talk to her and explain?” my sister Giselle asked as soon as I walked into her room. “I tried, but she won’t even talk to me. She is so angry.. the way she looks at me. I feel like she doesn’t love me anymore,” I responded. “Will, she still loves you. She is just upset. She thinks you cheated on her. You need to tell her what has been going on. Tell her why you invited Celeste to the party and tell her why you have been so distant lately. She will understand” Giselle urged.
Will’s Point Of View
How would I explain to her how I felt. My parents were trying to force me into a college , career and a relationship that I didn’t want. I was a week away from turning eighteen; and in my last semester of high school. I felt pressure coming from everyone. But never from Brett, why didn’t I just explain to her how I was feeling before. Now everything is messed up. “I don’t think she will understand,” I stated sadly to my sister. She is so cold to me now. I wish there was a way for her to know that I only want to be with her forever. Suddenly everything clicked. “There is a way! I know how to get her back. I’m going to propose to her. Once we are married our parents will have to accept her!,” I exclaimed.
Will’s Point Of View
“Wait! Your getting ahead of yourself brother. You can’t get married your both to young. Don’t’ you think your jumping into this?” Giselle asked with a worried face. “Not at all, I really love her and I want to be with her forever,” I declared shyly. “besides I’ll be eighteen in a week and she is already sixteen, which means her father just has to sign a paper saying its ok,” “Do you think he would do that?” Giselle asked. “Yes, actually I think he would. I’ll be able to provide a life for her that he can’t,” I said proudly. “Well brother, if this is what you want then I support you!” Giselle said excitedly.
Will’s Point Of View
Ten minutes later we were heading out to look for a ring. “Did you send her the flowers yet?” Giselle asked. “Yep, already taken care of,”
Will’s Point of View
“This is it, this is the one. What do you think?” I asked my sister. “I think it looks perfect for her!” She shouted and gave me a hug. “Now its just up to her to come and meet me, I really hope she comes,” I stated nervously.
I was taking care of the household including baby Tessa. Libby had started working more hours and was away from the house constantly. With no help from dad, and school, work and Will; my stress level was rising. I wasn’t sure how much longer I could last doing it all.I found out just how far I was stretching myself the next week. I got an F on my English report.
I tried to talk to Marci about all the stress I was having, but she was still upset at me about not telling her Will and I were an item first. Since I was in mostly senior level classes I only had one course with Marci. And it didn’t give me much time to try to apologize, besides she wasn’t accepting it.
Will and I were still great, but I could tell he was annoyed at only spending time with me at my job, or at my house while I took care of a baby. It seemed like there was never time for us to just be alone. I decided to surprise him with a nice dinner and walk one night.“I know that we haven’t gotten to spend much time together lately…,” I started to apologize to Will. “Brett, anytime I spend with you is wonderful. I understand that you are under a lot of pressure lately. I’m not looking to add to it.,” He said sweetly. “Thank you for understanding. It’s just been so difficult,” I said. He shushed me with a tender kiss.“My sister told my parents about you,” Will began. “And I’ve been spending so much time with you. They want to meet you. Do you think you can get free for a few hours this Sunday night for dinner?” Will asked me nervously. Meet his parents? Parents had always made me a little nervous since I hadn’t grown up in a traditional family. “Sure,” I said. “do I need to bring anything or where anything special?,” I asked. “Nope, just be your wonderful self,” He said and pulled me into him to snuggle.
No doubt about it I was really nervous about meeting Will’s parents. All I knew about his family was that they were very wealthy, they were known around town to throw very elaborate dinner parties. I wanted to look nice, I decided I needed an expert. I knew she was mad. But I picked up Tessa and headed straight to Marci’s house. When I got there I thought she was going to shoo me away. But she smiled and invited us both in.
Pretty soon we were laughing and having a good time just like we use to. “I’m so nervous about this dinner with his parents, what if they don’t like me?” I asked Marci. “Brett, they will like you. Everyone likes you, your like so sweet its annoying,” She said to me as she a walked to her closet to pick out some clothes for me.
“I’m really sorry about not telling you about Will first,” I began. “Things have just been so crazy with the baby and all the other stuff I do,” I said and looked down. “Don’t worry about it, I think I was just jealous. I guess I always thought I’d have a serious boyfriend before you,” Marci said in calm tone. “I’m really happy for you though,” She continued and gave me a hug. By the time I left Marci’s I felt 100 times better. Unfortunately Tessa was being very fussy and she spit up on my outfit. I had to change in a rush before I headed to Will’s.
I got to Will’s house and found him checking the mail. I went to join him. “You ready for this?” He asked me nervously. This can’t be a good sign I thought to myself. “Yep” We headed to his house.
We were greeted by his sister Giselle. I had seen her around school. She hung out with that pretty, rich crowd who were not so nice to me. But she seemed very friendly and asked me a lot about myself. She seemed really interested in getting to know me.
We went to the dining room and Will introduced me to his parents Edwin II & Bunny Lockwood. I was in awe of how many beautiful things they had in their house. “You have a very lovely home,” I said to his parents. I never did get a response. We sat down, and began dinner with the salad course. “So Edwin tells us you’re very smart” Edwin II said. “I wouldn’t say that,” I said nervously. “Yes you are Brett, you are taking mostly all senior level classes,” Will said coming to my defense. “Well is that true?” Edwin II asked sternly. “yes,” I said shyly. This only got worse from there. His parents drilled me on what my father did, where I live, my sister. I let it slip that she had a baby at fourteen and I could tell they didn’t like me.
After dinner we headed to the television room to watch a movie. I somehow ended up sitting by Will’s mother and the interaction continued. “So Brett, have you thought about college? Edwin will be going off to college next year you know,” She said. “Yes I know, I haven’t schedule any college visit yet but I will do that soon,” I said.
I looked at Will for support, but he was engrossed in the television show. She kept asking question after question. I couldn’t even tell you what show we were watching. It seemed only Will and Giselle got to actually look at it.
I was getting very annoyed. “So are you friends with Celeste Hart at all?” Bunny asked. Finally I’d had enough. “No, I said. She isn’t a very nice girl,” I said angrily.“Well, we are good friends with her family and have always known her to be very nice,” Bunny said defensively. Will poked the side of me. Now he wanted to come to my defense, I thought to myself, how annoying.“excuse me children, I have some things to get done,” Bunny said in a rush. “It was nice meeting you Brett,” Then she walked away. We all sat in silence for the next twenty minutes.
Finally Will walked me out. “I think that went horribly,” I said to him. “It wasn’t so bad,” He said in a strange tone. But I could tell he though the same thing.“I’ll see you tomorrow at school,” Will said to me. “Your not coming over tonight?” I asked. “I’ve got a lot of things to get done, but I’ll see you tomorrow,” And then I was outside of the door. As I got into my car I realized Will had not even given me a kiss goodbye.
Will’s Point Of View
I walked outside to find Giselle and I sat down. “So what do you think about that?” I asked her nervously. “It was pretty awful,” She said sadly, knowing exactly what I was talking about. “I don’t know what to do, I wanted to invite her to the dinner party next week but I don’t think she’ll be to comfortable,” I said to Giselle, referring to Brett. “Yea, maybe invite someone else. I really like her but I do think she would be uncomfortable,” Giselle replied.
When I got home I told Libby all about the dinner. “Well Brett I don’t know what to tell you, that is just rich people for you,” She said; as she put Tessa in her crib. “But I really really like him, I don’t want this to be something that comes between us,” I said to Libby. “Then don’t let it,” she replied back. Maybe she was right.
The next day at school Will was distant. I went to work at the library and he never showed up to study and hang out with me.
I didn’t have too much time to think about it. I was still working hard, taking care of everyone and feeling very alone. The late night wake up calls from Tessa were making me so tired during the day. My sleep schedule was very off.
After getting Tessa back to sleep Libby and I headed downstairs to get a snack. “I’ve decided I’m quitting school,” Libby said and stared at me for a reaction. “Libby, I don’t think that is a good idea. You need to stay in school and go to college so you can provide for yourself and Tessa,” I said sternly. “I’ve already made the decision, I just wanted to tell you. My birthday is in a few weeks so I’ll be able to and I’m doing it then. Working full time will be a lot better for Tessa and I. I know what’s best,” She said calmly. There was no arguing with her. She was going to do what she wanted to do. I needed to focus on myself.
A few days later I got another surprise while eating with dad. “Brett, I want to say that I am sorry for being an absent father to you all these years,” my father said. Where was this coming from? Was he drunk? “I’ve joined a new 24 step program and I’m changing my life around. No more drinking, I’m going to take control of my life. I want to thank you for all that you have done during this time of while I was absent but I have it from here,” He stated. “I’m very proud of you dad,” I said. Because I didn’t know what to say. But I figured his sobriety wouldn’t last for long, he had tried to quit drinking more then once.
But I was wrong, there was suddenly a change in his appearance. He sold the bar in our living room to buy Libby a car and a new television. He started hanging out with people his age. Since I was young I had never seen him with one friend, and now he seemed to have several. They were all in his group. It all seemed to happen so fast. I no longer was responsible for the bookkeeping, cleaning and cooking. I had a lot more free time. But I wasn’t spending it with the one person I wanted to.
Will and I went from spending everyday together to just hanging out once or twice a week. And when I did see him he no longer wanted to take me out, he just wanted to hang out on my couch watching sports. I figured he could have done that without me. But I really did love our times together, even if I could tell he was distracted. The truth was, I was head over heals in love with him. And it was a scary feeling. It was my hope that he would talk to me about whatever was on his mind so we could get back to being great.
I couldn’t have predicted what was going to happen next. It was a typical night in the library. I was catching up on schoolwork since things were a bit slow. When Marci rushed in. I could tell by the look on her face that something was wrong. “What’s wrong, Marc?,” I questioned. “I want to be the first one to tell you this. I don’t want you to here it from someone else. But I overheard Celeste and her little followers talking about some date she had with Will,” Marci stated and stared at me for a reaction. My heart sank. “What?” I said to her in disbelief. “I really hate telling you this Brett, believe me. But it’s true, they made sure I could here them too. They also dropped this picture,” Marci said getting agitated.
She handed it to me. Up front was a picture of Brittney Ross and a boy I had never seen holding hands, they were smiling. But in the background of the picture there was Celeste and Will. The way his arms were around her made me sick. I felt my breathing becoming irregular. I looked closer, they were at Wills house. And the worst part, the date stamp on the picture said it was just taken four days ago. I felt faint.
“We need to go to the doctor and get a proper test. I’ll make the appointment for tomorrow. We shouldn’t decide anything until we know the facts. It’s possible you aren’t pregnant, maybe you’re just late,” I said to my sister Libby. “Yea, maybe,” She said and cried some more. “will you sleep in my room tonight,” Libby begged. “of course,” I said softly to her. “have you eaten?” I questioned. “no,” she chocked. I’ll go make something and bring it up to you.
As I was fixing Libby food my mind was racing. I can’t believe it’s possible that my fourteen year old sister is pregnant. I had only made out with a boy and she could be pregnant? Who I was kidding I should have paid more attention to her dating. This was a much my fault as it was hers.
I usually wasn’t a television watcher but I joined Libby as she watched some ridiculous reality show. We were silent. I didn’t think it was a good time to tell her about my date with Will.
The next day we headed to the doctor. I felt like I was much more nervous this Libby. “We have the results back and you are in fact pregnant Elizabeth. You are in the middle of your second trimester so a bit far along. I’m glad you came in we need you to start on prenatal care immediately,” Said the doctor.
I looked over at Libby who didn’t seem to be shocked at all about hearing this news. “I have made the decision, I do not want to keep the baby,” said Libby to the doctor. “Unfortunately you are to far along in your pregnancy to terminate it. But I will give you information about adoption,” Dr. Smithson began. “I’m sorry, I need to excuse myself.” Libby I’ll be in the lobby whenever you are ready,” I said as I left the room. I was feeling dizzy, and I knew I was about to cry and I didn’t want Libby to see me.
Libby came out thirty minutes later. “the doctor said I need to make another appointment,” she said annoyed. I scheduled the next appointment and then Libby and I went home. We were silent the entire car ride. I parked the car and looked at Libby. “I’ll give you some time to think about this, it’s obviously your decision if you want to keep your child or give it up for adoption,” I said softly. I headed to my room to get ready for my date with Will.
We went to the diner for dinner. As we were deciding what to do next I heard rude comment that was clearly directed to Will and I. I looked over to see Brittney Ross, I knew from school that she was good friends with Celeste. So it didn’t come as a surprise to me that she thought I was a ‘downgrade’. I just wouldn’t let the comment bother me. Will and I headed to the local hang out.
We were having a great time playing foosball. “So tell me something about you that nobody knows,” I said to him as I was getting a lot more comfortable with him and I just wanted to know everything about him. “Um, I like science!” He said to me with a chuckle. “No something else!” I shouted over the game. “My real first name isn’t Will. I’m pretty sure more people have forgotten that by now,” He began smoothly. “My full name is Edwin William Lockwood III, Edwin just reminds me of my father so I’ve gone by Will,” “That’s pretty cool,” I said to him and smiled. When Will walked me to my door I was nervous. I thought for sure he was going to kiss me. But he just said he had a wonderful time and hopped we could do it again.
I walked in to find Libby yelling at dad who had obviously passed out in his underwear again. Gross. “He won’t wake up!” She said to me annoyed. “I’ll set an alarm for him, he’ll be fine,” I said to hear. “Why are you all smiley? Where have you been?” she asked rudely. “I was on a date with Will Lockwood!” I said excitedly. “Seriously?” She questioned with wide eyes. “Yea, and I think I kinda like him,” I whispered.
“Well anyways, I’m glad you home. I’ve been thinking about this a lot and I decided I want to keep the baby” she began. “I wanted to get ride of it because I wasn’t sure who the father is, but I don’t care about that anymore. I want something that is just mine,” Libby continued. “Libby a baby is a HUGE responsibility, It’s not just a toy. Things are tight around here with just the three of us. I’m glad you have made a decision but I just want you to know the reality of the situation,” I said to her sternly going into mom mode. “Your going to need to get a part time job, immediately,” I said sitting down.“I’ll ask Mr. Holland if I can pick up more hours at the library. We will need to switch rooms, your room is to small to fit a crib it, we will have to..” “Calm down lady!” Libby shouted at me. “Let’s just take this one step at a time. Tomorrow I’ll tell dad” She said. “sounds good,” I said and looked for my calculator to crunch number. My wonderful date with Will had completely left my mind.
The next day Libby told Dad. He didn’t seem to care that much as long as the child didn’t interfere with his current drinking routine. He refused to take up more hours at work so the expenses would be on Libby and I. A week later she secured part time work as a receptionist. And Will came over to help us rearrange rooms. He was such a sweetheart.
Since our first date Will and I were inseparable. After practice he would come to the library and work on his homework while I worked. He also spent a lot of time over at my house.
He would always tell me how much his missed me even though we saw each other constantly. But I understood what he meant. I miss him to whenever he wasn’t around.Being with him made me feel, so together. I could tell he felt that way around me as well. I wish everyone around us was as happy about our relationship.
A few weeks after we had been properly dating Marci came into class in a huff. “So you and Will are like official and you didn’t think to tell your best friend!” She said angrily. Honestly with my extra hours at the library, homework, home and will I hadn’t been spending much time with Marci lately. “I’m sorry Marc, things have been a bit hectic in my life lately,” I said. “Whatever!” She said and stormed away moving her things to another desk. Great! I thought to myself, exactly what I need right now. My day didn’t get much better.
While I was at work Celeste and her crew came in to make my life harder. They made me go on a wild goose chase for a reference guide they didn’t even need. I was annoyed. After that obstacle I went back to my desk and noticed Will wasn’t sitting in the chair close by anymore, his things were there.
So I set off to look for him and then saw him talking to Celeste. She didn’t seem happy. After Will was done talking with her he came up to give me a hug and tell me goodbye. Celeste just stormed by. I didn’t get it, why was she so hung up on him. Will had told me that she had called things off between them and he was glad. Maybe I didn’t have the full story. I was too busy to care.
The next day as we were working out together I asked him about Celeste. “She is just a mean girl Brett, don’t pay any attention to her,” He said in response. “But you said that she ended things right, why is she so upset?” I asked with a heavy breath. “I guess she thought we would get back together, but I told her the other night there was no way that would happen,” Will said.
Things had slowly worked there way into a routine. I was working late every night so dinner was no longer my responsibility. Libby seemed to enjoy her job, though she wasn’t doing very well at school. Dad started drinking more and Will and I were perfect.
It was the weekend and we had gone out with some of Wills friends who didn’t really like me. I was happy to be back home. “Do you mind if I stay over?” he asked me shyly. “I’d love that” I said to him with a smile. Will knew that I wanted to wait and he did as well so I didn’t feel any pressure with him. The next morning Libby woke us up to tell us she was making us breakfast. I thought it was very sweet of her as she didn’t really like to cook.
We all walked down to the kitchen to see the stove on fire! Thankfully I had quick reflexes. I was able to put out the fire in no time. Libby was still yelping when it was out. “Libby, its fine. It’s all out now,” I said to her. But then I realized that wasn’t what she was worked up over. She was going into labor. Will and I rushed her off the hospital. In no time at all I had a new baby niece. Libby named her Tessa.
A few days later, as soon as we got home Libby placed her in crib and started getting ready. “Libby where do you think you’re going?” I asked her sternly. “There is a party tonight and now I can make it!” She said excitedly. “I really think you should rest, you just had a baby and you need to be here when she wakes up and needs feed and changed,” I said. “I’ll sleep with I’m old!” She said with a giggle. “Besides, you’ll be here to do all that. I gotta go, don’t wait up,” She said and walked out the door. I looked at little sleeping Tessa and burst into tears.
